Montclair Smashburger Open For Business

by Jeffrey Bogert on December 7, 2009

December 7th, a day that President Roosevelt told us, will live in infamy. The attack on Pearl Harbor decisively drew the United States in to the second world war.  Today another significant event has taken place that will surely ignite the burger wars in Montclair, NJ.

SMASHBURGER . HAS . OPENED.

At 10 a.m. eastern standard time Smashburger , a Denver based company, opened its first New Jersey location in Glenmont Square at 15 Bloomfield Avenue in Montclair, NJ. Venturing to the new venue today for a grand opening day lunch, we arrived to a line of other like-minded folks waiting to try a smashed burger. I opted for 1/2 lb New Jersey Smashburger, Smashfires and a Stewart’s Root Beer for which a semi-frosted mug was provided. Once the meal was paid for, a number stand was handed over to be place on the table. It was 7 minutes from the time on the receipt to the delivery of the meal. During the short wait no less than 3 employees checked in to see if there was anything I needed or asked how I was doing. The order was delivered and I set upon my burger prey and it ended up as to be a 5 napkin meal.  All in all it was a very nice experience and as for the NJ Smashburger, I will to defer to Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction. To see what else is available at Smashburger please see the Smashburger Menu .

Also haven’t been to Smashburger yet but I was planning on going sometime this week. The photos in the slideshow make it look like a nice place. Also, the smash fries sound wonderfully delicious. Can’t wait to go.

Checked this out last night. This “upscale fast-food” burger place (a la Five Guys) seems to be the thing now and this is the best one yet, IMO. Recently tried out Elevation Burger down the street and I enjoyed this better. I considered creating my own burger, but decided to go with the classic Smashburger to set the benchmark somewhere for the place. The leaf lettuce and flavor of the burger itself made it (dare I say) “shake shackish”. Only (extremely minor) complaint is that the flavor of the Smashsauce is almost completely lost in the ketchup and mustard on this particular burger. Easily rectified by leaving those off next time. Fries covered in garlic, rosemary and other spices are incredible. Also enjoyed the deep fried pickles. Can’t wait to get back here and create my own burger.

I went to SmashBurger today! Place looks great – very clean and wonderful staff. I created my own burger with Swiss and grilled onions. It was delish – came out from the kitchen fast and hot! I also had the sweet potato fries which were yummy too, albeit slightly oily.
The staff is soooo eager and friendly – perhaps a tad too eager? I was reading a book while dining and was interrupted 5 times. One gal even dared to take my last few fries away early! LOL. But they mean well. :)

Great place – I’ll be back for more! Thank you Jeff for this tip and the gift card. :D

I have visited Smashburger 2x and would visit again – takeout. Half of my kids prefer Elevation and rest Smashburger. Service and quality of the burgers somewhat chaotic but I’ll let them go through their learning curve before I pass final judgement in a couple of months.
Hook me up with the coupon, thx.
